Main Characters and Voice Cast

The Young Anastasia
Prior to the attack by Rasputin,
the innocent Anastasia dances with her father, before her grandmother
calls her over to give her a present. The present is a music
box that plays their song, which the young Anastasia and the
grandmother start to sing along to.
The real life Anastasia was
actually given a similar music box by her grandmother for her
13th birthday, but the real one had a silver ballerina on top
of it, where the one in the movie does not. The voice of the
young Anastasia is that of Kirsten Dunst. However the singing
is done by Lacey Chabert (remember that old TV show Party of
Five?)

Anya / Anastasia
After the attack, Anastasia
lost her memory and was brought up in an orphanage under the
name of Anya. After leaving the orphanage she sets out to find
clues to her past and her family.
Meg Ryan does the voice of Anastasia,
and I think she did a terrific job. She was initially unsure
as to whether or not she wanted the job, but was soon convinced
by the people at FOX. They took an audio clip of Meg Ryan speaking
in the movie "Sleepless in Seattle" and animated Anya
speaking the lines. How could you not say yes when they went
to so much trouble!
Anya's singing was performed
by Liz Callaway. She was hired at the last minute to do a quick
temp track for FOX because the singer they had booked initially
could'nt make it to a recording session. They were so impressed
with Liz though that they fired the other girl and gave Liz
the job!

The Young Dimitri
A kitchen boy working at the
palace, Dimitri is curious and mischevious. When the guards
storm the palace he hustles Anastasia and her grandmother the
Dowager Empress out of a secret dorway in the wall that lead
to the servants quarters. He closed the door behind them just
in time, the guards filled the room and he was beaten unconscious.
When he awoke he found the Grand Duchess Anastasia's beloved
music box on the floor next to him.
Young Dimitri's voice is that
of Glenn Walker Harris Jr.

Dimitri
Since his palace job was ..well,
made redundant, Dimitri has been making a living however he
can, along with his good pal Vlad who also had ties to the old
days at the palace. His current activities include stealing,
forging travel papers, and holding auditions to find someone
he can train up to impersonate Anastasia, so he can trick the
dowager empress into believing it is the real Anastasia. Why?
Because she is offering a 10 million ruble reward for the safe
return of her granddaughter!
John Cusack is responsible for
the voice of the adult Dimitri. I cannot imagine anyone else
being able to do a better job either, Cusack's voice adds so
much depth and believability to this character.
Dmitri's singing voice is that
of Jonathon Dokuchitz.

Rasputin
Feeling betrayed by the Romanov
family, Rasputin sells his soul for the power to take his revenge
upon them. After his initial attack and believing the family
to be dead, he finds himself in a sort of "limbo".
He is seperated from his power source and is relatively hopeless.
However, upon discovery of Anastasia's survival, Bartok reunites
Rasputin with the power source and Rasputin sets about completing
his revenge.
The one and only Christopher
Lloyd is responsible for the voice of Rasputin, and how very
appropriate he is for the part! The studio had considered Patrick
Stewart (star trek) for the part also, but Christopher LLoyd
ended up with it thankfully!
Rasputin's singing is performed
by Jim Cummings.

Bartok (The Magnificent)
How did this sweet little bat
get mixed up with the likes of the evil Rasputin? Who knows.
He is not quite so bent on revenge and murder as Rasputin is,
he'd rather party and have a bit of a dance. Thankfully there
is a happy ending for Bartok, as right out of the blue he finds
love! (or rather love finds him!)
The mighty talented Hank Azaria
is the voice of Bartok. You may recognise his voice (though
somewhat disguised!) from his work on The Simpsons as Apu Nahasapeemapetilon/Chief
Wiggum/Dr. Nick/Bumblebee Man.

The Dowager Empress Marie Fyodorovna
/ Grandmother
Mother of the Tsar, Nicholas
II, she was lucky to escape with her life and Anastasia during
the attack, thanks to the young kitchen boy Dimitri who showed
them how to escape.
During the attack she lost her
son, daughter in law, 3 granddaughters and her only grandson,
and then she also lost Anastasia when they got separated during
their escape. Not hard to understand why she was offering a
10 million Ruble reward to whoever could reunite her with Anastasia!
The lonely Dowager Empress was subjected to years of girls coming
to her pretending to be Anastasia, until she finally decided
she had had enough, and discontinued her search. But thanks
to the persistance of Dimitri (after finding out that his Anya
really was Anastasia) Marie and Anastasia were finally reunited.
Voice contributed by Angela Lansbury!

Vladimir
Dimitri's partner in crime.
Vladimir used to be a member of the imperial court, and has
a very obvious crush on The Dowager Empress's first cousin Sophie.
Voiced by Kelsey Grammer! (AKA
sideshow Bob!)

|
|
Sophie
The Dowager Empress's first
cousin, and the apple of Vlad's eye! She is responsible for
trying to weed the possible real Anastasia's out from the obvious
fakes before they get through to see Marie. The voice actress
Playing this part is Bernadette Peters.

Pooka
Anastasia runs into this stray
pup as soon as she leaves the orphanage, right when she really
needs a friend! He is protective and doesn't immediately take
to Dimitri, but gets on well with Vlad. And he's sooo cute!

*
Composer David Newman's father Alfred Newman
wrote the score for 1956's Anastasia.
*
The Parisian bridge on which the confrontation between
Rasputin and Dimitri and Anastasia occurs is theAlexander III bridge,
named after the real Anastasia Romanov's grandfather
on the occasion of his state visit to France in the 1870s.
*
The drawing the Empress holds when she and Anya are
reminiscing (the same one we see little Anastasia give her at
the beginning of the movie) is a picture the real Anastasia had
drawn for her father in 1914.

*
The portrait in the ballroom of the whole family includes a dog.
The dog existed. This spaniel named Joy belonged to
Anastasia's younger brother, Alexei, and was found alive at the house
where the family was killed. Anastasia's own dog, Jimmy, did not survive.

*
The real Anastasia once wore a dress almost exactly like
the one Anya wears in the last scenes of the movie.
This same dress was seen in the 1956 movie version of Anastasia.

*
When Anya returns to the palace in St. Petersburg and
is in the ballroom you can see the painting of the coronation
of Alexandra and Nicholas on the left hand side
being the first picture, which is a real painting.

Contrary to what happened in the animated movie, Rasputin was actually
murdered
2
years before the Romanov family was murdered. He apparantly saw it
coming
because
he wrote out a will just weeks before he was killed, and in it he
predicted
that if a member of the imperial family was to be involved in his
murder (the murder of Rasputin himself that is) that the entire Romanov
family would be killed within 2 years by "the Russian people".
Here
is a copy of what the will said :
| "I
write and leave behind me this letter at St. Petersburg. I feel
that I shall leave life before January 1. I wish to make known
to the Russian people, to Papa, to the Russian Mother and to the
Children, to the land of Russia, what they must understand. If
I am killed by common assassins, and especially by my brothers
the Russian peasants, you, Tsar of Russia, will have nothing to
fear for your children, they will reign for hundreds of years
in Russia. But if I am murdered by boyars, nobles, and if they
shed my blood, their hands will remain soiled with my blood, for
twenty-five years they will not wash their hands from my blood.
They will leave Russia. Brothers will kill brothers, and they
will kill each other and hate each other, and for twenty-five
years there will be no nobles in the country. Tsar of the land
of Russia, if you hear the sound of the bell which will tell you
that Grigori has been killed, you must know this: if it was your
relations who have wrought my death, then no one in the family,
that is to say, none of your children or relations, will remain
alive for more than two years. They will be killed by the Russian
people. I go, and I feel in me the divine command to tell the
Russian Tsar how he must live if I have disappeared. You must
reflect and act prudently. Think of your safety and tell your
relations that I have paid for them with my blood. I shall be
killed. I am no longer among the living. Pray, pray, be strong,
think of your blessed family. -Grigori" |
2
years after the murder of Grigori Rasputin, there was a revolution
and the
Romanovs
were tracked down and executed by forces of the Bolshevik secret police.
And
as it turns out, one of the people involved in murdering Rasputin
was
a
member of the Romanov family.
For more info here are some very good books on the
subject :
Did you know that in 1998, there was an ice
skating performance of Anastasia the animated movie, titled
"Anastasia on Ice"? This is the poster that was
advertising it.
Isn't the guy playing Dimitri hot!
His name is actually Sebastien Britten and
he is from Montreal. He apparantly played the part of Dimitri
very believably!
